The DVR stores the video footage on an internal hard drive. The size of the drive and the recording options determine the total number of days the system can store. This camera is equipped with a manual zoom 2.8-12mm lens. The manual zoom lens allows you to mount the camera and then, using the zoom knob on the camera, adjust or “zoom” the viewing area in or out until you get the perfect view. The green lens chart below indicates viewing distances associated with this lens.
This camera is equipped with Infrared LED’s. The LED’s cast out infrared light the human eye cannot see, but the camera can. During the day the camera produces vivid color video, when the light level drops below a minimum point the camera automatically switches the IR system on. The camera then produces very high quality black and white night vision video.

New System Quick-Start
In this guide we will walk you through the initial setup and testing of the DVR system. We have factory tested each major component before shipping. However pretesting the equipment before installation will help you learn how to use the system and assure proper operation. Please follow the steps as described. In the end it will save you time and effort!
This manual is indented to provide general knowledge of how to get a system operating. If you require more detailed information please refer to the many “How to Guides” and manuals we have provide in the green Customer Support CD that we have included with your purchase. In order to get started, we recommend clearing off a table, or workbench so you can set the system up in a controlled environment. Once you have the work area clear and all the equipment unboxed you can refer to the following pretest checklist. Make sure you keep ALL boxes and packaging in case an item needs to be returned.
- Unpack one of your cables for testing. If it’s premade, use the shortest length. If you are making your own cable, make one for testing at a smaller length. How to make a BNC fitting is found here.
- Unpack your power supply for the cameras. If you are using individual power packs for each camera, you will only need one.
- Unpack the DVR and plug it in with the power supply that was included with it.
- Connect your test cable to the camera using both the provided ends, and make sure the power supply is connected to an outlet as well.
- Connect your monitor to the DVR unit with the appropriate cable.
STEP 1: DVR Testing
Now that you have unboxed your equipment, it’s time to test the video ports on the DVR. Before you can test the ports, you will have to plug the DVR into a power source. Only use the power supply that came with the DVR accessories.
Once you have the power supply plugged in, you will have to connect a monitor to the DVR in order to see the video. This monitor can be connected with a VGA cable, or an HDMI cable.
Once you have the monitor connected, and the DVR powered on, it’s time to test the video ports. Go ahead and connect your test cable to each port on the back of the DVR, and wait for the video to appear on screen. If any of the ports fail to show a video, please give us a call at 1-800-431-3056. Once you have verified all the ports display video you can start testing cameras.
Make sure to leave that cable and power supply connected to the DVR for the rest of the tests.
STEP 2: Camera Testing
Now that we’re testing cameras, unbox all the cameras that you have, and set them on the table close to you. Using the same cable as before, connect each camera one at a time. Again, if any cameras don’t show a video, please give us a call at 1-800-431-3056. Once you have verified that all the cameras are working, you can move on the final test.
STEP 3: Test Cables and Power
The last step to testing each part is to make sure the other cables and power supplies are operating. If you don’t have any more cables or power supplies to check, you can move on to the next page. Otherwise, you will simply replace the cable we used previously with one that hasn't been tested. Same with power, just replace the power supply with one that hasn't been tested. You can use the same camera for testing the additional wire and cables.
Depending on your power supply, you might have the plug and play type as shown above, or you may have a multi-camera power supply as shown in the photo below. If you have a multi-camera power supply, please make sure you follow the instructions printed on the inside of the box. Typically, the power cables terminate directly to the power supply, so there is usually a (+) row and a (-) row. Either way, it’s important to test all your adapters/channels to make sure there are no issues. If any of these cables or power supplies don’t work, give us a call at 1-800-431-3056.
STEP 1: Setting up the DVR
Now that you have tested the DVR, it’s time to set it up for operation. Please make sure you have the owner’s manual for your DVR handy, as you will need it to set the system up. The owner’s manuals are included on the GREEN Backstreet Surveillance CD that came in the folder with your invoice. All manuals can also be found on our website under guides and manuals located on the left side column of any web page. Please consult your owner’s manual for specific information regarding the setup process. Unpack the rest of the accessories that came with the DVR. They will usually include a mouse, and remote control as well. Please refer to the owner’s manual for a complete list of accessories.
PLEASE NOTE:The DVR is intended to be used with a mouse. You may use the remote control if you like, but typically the mouse is a little easier.
You should already have the monitor connected to the DVR, so all that’s needed is to turn the unit on. Once it starts it will launch the “start-up wizard” which is basically an initial configuration. You will need to go through this wizard, and change settings that are applicable. Things like the current date, or custom recording schedule. By default the units are programmed to record all channels in motion activated mode. Each unit is programmed slightly different, please refer to the specific owner’s manual for your DVR to see the options listed in the wizard.
You can come back to these settings later, so don’t worry if you skip a step or accidentally close the wizard. The important things to setup at this point in time is the date/time, as well as the recording schedule. Once these have been set you can move the DVR to its permanent location.
The last connection that needs to be made is optional, but you will need it for any remote viewing capabilities. There is a LAN port on the back of the DVR, and it accepts an Ethernet cable. This cable will need to be directly connected to your router or modem. This step is best saved for when the DVR has been tested and configured.
Once the connections have been made, and the DVR has been configured it’s time to run your cables.
STEP 2: Cable Installation and Fittings
Depending on the type of cabling you purchased, you may or may not need to install the fittings. If you don’t need to install your own fittings, you can skip this section, and move on to the premade cable section.
DO NOT CUT THE ENDS OFF PRE-MADE CABLES OR CAMERAS! Doing so will void the warranty, and make your install that much more difficult. We have cable adapters and connectors you can use if you have a unique setup.
DIY BNC Fitting
If this is your first time making this type of cable, please refer to the “How to make a BNC fitting Connection” guide in the Appendix of this guide, it can also be found at http://www.backstreet-surveillance.com/cctv-guide-manuals.html.
This will explain the use of the coax stripper tool, as well as how the fittings should be installed. Once you’ve familiarized yourself, you can cut the correct length first, and then put the fittings on. We recommend cutting an extra 5 feet past your measurements.
Once you have cut the cable to length you can use the tool to strip the shielding off the cable, and then attach the fittings. You will also need to put any applicable power fittings on the cable. To do this, you will expose the red and black power cables, and simply screw them into the fittings. These power fittings vary depending on the power supply you are using, so feel free to call us at 1-800-431-3056 if you have any questions regarding this.
These cables already have the fittings installed, so it’s a plug-and-play setup. The side with the male power plug goes into the camera, and the side with the female power plug goes into the DVR/power supply. Both ends have a BNC fitting, so you push it on the connector, then twist it to lock it into place.
With either type of cable, it’s recommended that they are tested before being installed.
STEP 3: Camera Adjustments
Manual Zoom Lens
You may have purchased cameras with an adjustable lens, and if so, they will need to be configured to have the best possible image. Before the cameras are installed, make sure the adjustments work. There are usually two screws on the camera itself, one being zoom the other focus. At this point, it doesn't matter if it’s adjusted the way it needs to, just that the adjustments work. Otherwise, if they all do, go ahead and install the cameras. Once they are installed you can make the final adjustments to the camera. These adjustments can be hard to make on your own, so having someone to help you will make the process much easier.

Fixed lens cameras don’t really need adjustments. As long as they have been tested, and verified, then you can install them.OSD Menu
Regardless of whether the camera is a fixed lens or adjustable, they may have what’s called an “OSD menu”. This is usually accompanied by the “OSD button”. This is a small round button that is on the pigtail of the camera. Please note, these adjustments do not need to be configured. These are advanced camera options that are set at the factory. The key is to make sure that button isn’t accidentally pressed during the installation. If so, some settings might be changed, and you will have to use that button to change them back. If you have purchased HD-SDI cameras, these often come with 2 video leads, and a power lead. One video lead is analog, and won’t show any video when connected to the DVR. Please make sure you check the quick start guide for that camera to learn which one is SDI, and which one is analog, but typically YELLOW is analog and GREEN/BLACK is SDI.
PTZ cameras are in a class of their own, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be tested. In fact, because the installation is more difficult, it becomes that much more important to make sure the camera works before you put it in place.
Your PTZ camera should come with its own power supply in the box, and that’s the one to test it with. PLEASE NOTE: Not all power supplies will look the same. The owner’s manual for your PTZ camera will clarify any confusion.
Using the same video cable, you can connect that PTZ camera to the DVR to check the image. Once the video cable is connected you can plug in the power supply for that PTZ camera. Once done, that camera will move around on its own for about 1 min. This is just the startup test the camera does to make sure the motors work. If you plug in the camera, and it doesn't move, please give us a call at 1-800-431-3056. As long as you verified the camera moves when plugged in, and that there is good video on the screen, then it’s ready to be installed.
Please note, if you are using a joystick controller with the PTZ camera, it’s worthwhile to test the control connections as well. That way you can be sure how to connect and control the camera prior to the installation. STEP 4: Camera Mounting and Installation
Dome cameras usually just unscrew and come apart. Once it’s taken apart then you can install the base plate on either a wall or ceiling, and the screw the rest of the camera into place. Bullet cameras install fairly easily as well, simply screw the base plate attached to the adjustment arm to either the wall or ceiling. Again, please refer to our “Camera Installation Guide” found in the How-To section here: http://www.backstreet-surveillance.com/cctv-guide-manuals.html
Included in your purchase is technical support for as long as you own the DVR. If you need any assistance with remote viewing, or setup we will be glad to assist you over the phone. In order to expedite the process, please have the following steps completed BEFORE you call in for support.
- Verify you are at the same location as the DVR. We cannot assist when you are at a remote location.
- Verify the cables are all seated tight in the DVR, and that no connections are missing. ;i>
If we are setting up remote viewing we generally need access to a computer that’s on the same network, as well as some other things. Please complete the list below before calling for remote viewing setup.
- Please make sure Team Viewer has been installed. You can download a copy of that at www.teamviewer.com. (When asked, do a “basic install” for “personal, non-commercial use”)
- We will also need to access your router during this process, meaning we need the administrator password for your router. Some routers provide a way to reset this password if you’re not sure what it is, otherwise your Internet Service Provider can tell you this password.
