Houston, located in Southeast Texas near Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Texas and in the Southern United States. It holds the distinction of being the fourth-most populous city in the United States, following New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and the seventh-most populous city in North America. As of 2022, Houston's population stands at 2,302,878. Serving as the seat and largest city of Harris County, it is also the principal city of the Greater Houston metropolitan area, which ranks as the fifth-most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States and the second-most populous in Texas after Dallas–Fort Worth. Houston is a significant anchor within the larger megaregion known as the Texas Triangle.
Spanning a land area of 640.4 square miles (1,659 km2), Houston is the ninth-largest city in the United States in terms of land area. Notably, it is the largest city in the country whose government is not consolidated with a county, parish, or borough. While the majority of Houston lies within Harris County, there are small portions that extend into Fort Bend and Montgomery counties, bordering other prominent communities of Greater Houston, such as Sugar Land and The Woodlands.
Houston's origins trace back to August 30, 1836, when it was founded by land investors at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou, now known as Allen's Landing. It officially became a city on June 5, 1837. The city takes its name from General Sam Houston, the former president of the Republic of Texas, who achieved Texas's independence from Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto, located 25 miles (40 km) east of Allen's Landing. Following a brief period as the capital of the Texas Republic in the late 1830s, Houston experienced steady growth throughout the 19th century, establishing itself as a regional trading hub.
The turn of the 20th century ushered in a period of rapid growth for Houston, driven by various economic factors. These included the rise of its port and railroad industry, as well as the decline of Galveston as Texas's primary port city.
