What are PoE Cameras?
PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. The technology transmits power to the cameras, and video data from the camera back to the NVR on one Ethernet cable (Cat5 or Cat6), instead of using copper two conductor power wires, batteries, or wall outlets. One cable from each camera to a PoE equipped NVR, network connection, or stand alone PoE unit is all that is needed.
What is the Benefit of PoE cameras?
Reliability, cable savings, less electronics, huge data transmission capabilities, and distributive system design. Bottom line, PoE systems offer higher performance, better reliability and cost savings compared to other CCTV technologies.
The diagram below is a good example of how flexible PoE security systems can be. They are the right choice for small, medium, and large facilities. Many consumers prefer PoE systems for their home and shops.
Our ProVue IP NVRs are equipped with onboard PoE, keeping things easy one cable from each camera to the NVR, simple plug and play.
How far can PoE send data?
Most standard PoE devices are limited to 300 foot distance for Cat6, and 220 foot distance for Cat5.
The good news is that is not maximum distance. Using our PoE extenders you can regenerate the data signal and power to extend the distance another 300 feet. Many of our PoE units have an extension option, by reducing the ports used in half, you double the transmission distance to 600 feet using Cat6.
Link up to 3 PoE Units Tripling Max Distance
Our PoE units have the ability to double the maximum port distance from 300 feet to 600 feet. This is done with a toggle switch on the PoE unit. The downside is you lose the use of half of the PoE ports. By flipping that toggle switch you doubled the power source for half of the ports by taking the power way from the other half.
Extenders
PoE Extenders regenerate the video data and power every 300 feet and DO NOT need a power source. They can be directly buried in the ground, but we recommend placing them in a PVC electrical box to help protect the connections. You can use up to three PoE extenders on one camera connection with the exception of PTZ cameras- they draw too much power- and you must limit them to one PoE Extender.
