Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware. It was built on the site of the first Swedish settlement in North America, Fort Christina. The city is located at the confluence of the Christina River and Brandywine Creek, near where the Christina meets the Delaware River. Wilmington is the county seat of New Castle County and a major city in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area, which is synonymous with the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The city was named after Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, by Proprietor Thomas Penn, who was prime minister during the reign of George II of Great Britain. According to the 2020 census, Wilmington's population was 70,898. It is part of the Delaware Valley metropolitan statistical area, which includes Philadelphia, Reading, Camden, and other urban areas. The core metropolitan statistical area had a population of 6,228,601 in 2020, making it the seventh largest metropolitan region in the nation. The combined statistical area population is 7.366 million.
