According to the 2020 census, the city's population was 206,518, making it the second most populous city in New England after Boston. Worcester is located approximately 40 miles west of Boston, 50 miles east of Springfield, and 40 miles north-northwest of Providence. In the 19th century, Worcester became an industrial city thanks to the Blackstone Canal and rail transport. It was known for producing machinery, textiles, and wire. The city experienced significant population growth due to the influx of European immigrants during this time. However, after World War II, Worcester's manufacturing base declined, leading to long-term economic and population decline. It wasn't until the 1990s that the city began to rebound, with the growth of higher education, medicine, biotechnology, and new immigrant communities. Today, Worcester is recognized for its diversity and large immigrant population. It is home to communities of Vietnamese, Brazilians, Albanians, Puerto Ricans, Ghanaians, Dominicans, and others. Approximately 22% of the city's population was born outside the United States. Worcester is also a center of higher education, with eight colleges and universities located there, including the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and Clark University.
