According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 153,701, down from 173,514 in 2010. Jackson experienced the largest population decline among major cities in the United States during this time. It serves as the anchor for the Jackson metropolitan statistical area, the largest metropolitan area within the state and the 10th largest urban area in the Deep South. The metropolitan area has an estimated population of 600,000, representing over one-fifth of Mississippi's total population. Jackson is situated on the Pearl River in the greater Jackson Prairie region of Mississippi. It is the only city in the state with a population exceeding 100,000. Founded in 1821, Jackson was established as the new state capital and named after General Andrew Jackson, who played a significant role in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and later served as U.S. president. The city was burned down during the American Civil War following the nearby Battle of Vicksburg in 1863. In the 1920s, Jackson became the most populous city in the state due to a natural gas boom. It is now known as "The City with Soul" and has a rich musical history in blues, gospel, folk, and jazz.
