Topeka is the capital city of Kansas and the seat of Shawnee County. It is located along the Kansas River in central Shawnee County, in northeast Kansas. The population of the city was 126,587 as of the 2020 census. The Topeka metropolitan statistical area, which includes several counties, had a population of 233,870 in the 2010 census. The name "Topeka" comes from a Kansa-Osage word that means "place where we dig potatoes" or "a good place to dig potatoes." It was first recorded in 1826 as the Kansa name for the Kansas River. The founders of Topeka chose the name in 1855 because it was unique, had Native American origins, and sounded pleasant. Joseph James, a mixed-blood Kansa Native American known as Jojim, is credited with suggesting the name. The city was laid out in 1854 and was one of the Free-State towns established by antislavery individuals after the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill.
