According to the 2020 U.S. census, the city has a population of 498,715, making it the eighth most populous city in the Southeast and the 38th most populous city in the entire United States. Atlanta is the central hub of the larger Atlanta metropolitan area, which is home to over 6.1 million people. This makes it the eighth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. This makes it the second-largest metro area in the state, following Atlanta, and the 9th most populous urban center in the Deep South. In terms of metropolitan areas in the United States, Augusta ranks as the 95th largest.
