    Kansas City, Missouri (KC or KCMO) is the largest city in Missouri in terms of population and area. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 508,090, making it the 37th most populous city in the United States. It serves as the central city of the Kansas City metropolitan area, which spans the Missouri-Kansas state line and has a population of 2,392,035. The majority of the city is located in Jackson County, with parts extending into Clay, Cass, and Platte counties. Kansas City was established in the 1830s as a port on the Missouri River where it meets the Kansas River. It was incorporated as the town of Kansas on June 1, 1850, shortly followed by the establishment of the Kansas Territory. To avoid confusion between the two, the name Kansas City was given to distinguish them. Situated on the western boundary of Missouri with Kansas, with Downtown positioned near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, the city covers approximately 319.03 square miles, making it the 25th largest city in the United States by total area. It serves as one of the county seats of Jackson County, along with the prominent satellite city of Independence.
