The completion of the National and Michigan roads and the arrival of rail solidified the city's role as a manufacturing and transportation hub. The city is often referred to as the "Crossroads of America" and the "Railroad City" due to its transportation history. Since the city-county consolidation in 1970, known as Unigov, Indianapolis has been governed by an elected 25-member city-county council led by the mayor.

The presence of the University of Notre Dame also influences the city's economy and culture. Gary Crime Rating:

F (539.74% higher than national average)

    Highest Risk Crime: Murder

Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, known for its major industrial activity. It is home to U.S. Steel's Gary Works, the largest steel mill complex in North America. The city is located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, about 25 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. It is also adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Park and part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was named after Elbert Henry Gary, a lawyer who was the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. U.S. Steel established Gary in 1906 as a company town for its steel mills. Initially, Gary was a diverse city, but it experienced white flight in the 1970s, resulting in the highest percentage of African Americans in the nation. According to the 2020 census, Gary has a population of 69,093, making it the ninth-largest city in Indiana. Like other Rust Belt cities, Gary has been greatly affected by the decline of the steel industry and the loss of manufacturing jobs since the 1970s. Consequently, the city has experienced a significant decrease in population, losing 61% since 1960. This has led to economic decline and urban decay, making Gary an example of industrial decline in America. Gary is served by the Gary/Chicago International Airport, which provides an alternative to the larger airports in the Chicago region. Public transportation in the city is provided by the Gary Public Transportation Corporation and the South Shore Line passenger railway, connecting to the Chicago transit system. Additionally, Gary is known as the birthplace of the Jackson family, a well-known family of entertainers, including the late singer Michael Jackson.
