    Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska and the county seat of Douglas County. It is located in the Midwestern United States on the Missouri River, about 10 miles north of the mouth of the Platte River. According to the 2020 census, the population of Omaha was 486,051, making it the nation's 40th-most populous city. Omaha is the anchor of the eight-county Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area, which has a population of 967,604, making it the 58th-largest metropolitan area in the United States. The Omaha–Council Bluffs–Fremont, NE–IA Combined Statistical Area (CSA) has a total population of 1,004,771, according to 2020 estimates. Within a 50-mile radius of Downtown Omaha, approximately 1.5 million people reside in the Greater Omaha area. Omaha is considered a global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and in 2020 it was given "sufficiency" status. The city's pioneer period began in 1854 when it was founded by speculators from neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa. The city earned its nickname, the "Gateway to the West," due to its location along the Missouri River and the Lone Tree Ferry crossing. In 1898, Omaha hosted the World's Fair, known as the Trans-Mississippi Exposition, which showcased the new West to the world. Throughout the 19th century, Omaha's central location and transportation infrastructure made it an important national transportation hub. Industries such as transportation, jobbing, railroads, and breweries played significant roles in the city's development. In the 20th century, the Omaha Stockyards and meatpacking plants gained international prominence. Today, Omaha is home to the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies: Berkshire Hathaway, Kiewit Corporation, Mutual of Omaha, and Union Pacific Corporation. Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, is one of the world's wealthiest people according to Forbes rankings. Additionally, Omaha houses five Fortune 1000 headquarters, including Green Plains, Intrado, TD Ameritrade, Valmont Industries, and Werner Enterprises. The city is also home to notable institutions such as the First National Bank of Omaha, several large architecture/engineering firms, and the Gallup Organization.
